Cabeau Evolution Travel Pillow Review

As I wore the Cabeau Evolution pillow during a drive sitting at a back seat of a van through the congested Long Island Expressway, the pillow’s soft yet supportive cushioning came to good use. Even while wearing headphones, the pillow didn’t interfere or make it uncomfortable.

The Cabeau Evolution travel pillow is like a “U” shaped pillow, except the sides rise up a little more than they do on normal pillows. I’ve noticed that this allows for more support when you lean your head to the sides. Watch the video above for a more visual representation of how to use the Cabeau Evolution pillow.

Pros:

I really like the idea of having a draw cord on a neck pillow because it helps to keep the pillow in place and makes it more supportive. The draw cord can be detached, attached, tightened and loosened. Cabeau recommends wearing the pillow backwards for extra support of your chin, but I prefer wearing it forwards.

The Cabeau pillow’s cover is extremely soft and also removable, making it easy to wash after use.

No other travel pillow has a pocket like the Cabeau Evolution pillow does, which is a nice feature when you need a place for your phone when listening to music during road trips or flights. Unfortunately the pocket won’t fit most newer smartphones, as I’ve mentioned in the video.

When I first saw the Evolution pillow carrying pouch, I thought it looked kind of flimsy and not something I would use often. I was wrong. I’m now convinced that all companies should make pouches which help to compress their pillows, allowing for them to be more compact and portable.

In addition with a carrying pouch, the pillow also comes with a pair of earplugs – a nice finishing touch which completes an already well thought out product.

Cons:

The phone pocket located at the side of the Cabeau pillow is large enough to fit an iPhone 4s, but with my case on the phone it won’t fit. An iPhone 5 or 5s would stick out slightly if it didn’t have a case, and an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus simply wouldn’t fit. The idea of having a pocket on a travel pillow is clever, but the execution wasn’t there.

With it’s raised supportive sides, Cabeau pillow gives your head something to lean on, but at the same time it feels a bit like a neck brace. An easy fix for this would be to loosen the draw cords, but still I feel like it gets in the way.

Wearing the Cabeau pillow can get warm, since it’s almost like a scarf, but that’s a good thing if you live in New York and it’s seemingly winter all year. It’s March and still snowing. 🙁 Also, planes tend to be cold, so having a warm pillow could be a good thing.

Update:

I’ve had the Cabeau travel pillow for over a year now, and I’ve used it on a few more flights since then. It has held up well since and it looks exactly the same as it did new.

For a few month long period, I kept the pillow tightly packed in it’s carry pouch. When I took it out of it’s pouch to use, it was still flat and didn’t come back to it’s original shape immediately. I ended up having to wait a bit more than 24 hours until it completely regained it’s shape. So take note – if you keep the pillow tightly compressed for a long period of time, it will regain it’s shape, but it’ll take some time.

The Verdict:

The Cabeau is an overall comfortable yet supportive travel pillow, well suited for flights and general travel.
