The design on this lively, spinner suitcase embodies America.

In designing the Fernando by Heys FVT USA suitcase, Heys partnered with Fernando Volken Togni, a Brazilian digital artist. The design is incredibly detailed and has icons, architectural and symbolic, that represent America, including the Statue of Liberty, a hotdog, the White House, and the Golden Gate Bridge among others. The shell of this suitcase is truly eye catching and will show off your American pride while traveling domestically or abroad.

The Heys FVT USA suitcase without a doubt looks great, but is it travel worthy? Does it hold up when checked in? Is it well designed? Here are my answers to those questions and thoughts on the luggage after testing it out for a bit:

Pros:

• Lightweight, the 30″ check in version weighs 11.4 lbs (independently weighed by me using my luggage scale – not regurgitated from manufacturers specs, although it weighs 11.7 pounds according to Heys.)
• Expandable
• Smooth spinner wheels
• Built in TSA approved lock
• Durable and smooth zippers
• Gorgeous design

When you first receive the suitcase, you’ll see instructions to remove a thin protective film from the suitcase. Honestly, it’s hard to tell that there’s a protective film, but after removing it, you’ll reveal the design in it’s full glossy glory.

In my opinion, the main and most stand-out feature of this suitcase is by far it’s design. But addition to it’s striking exterior, the Heys luggage has some other great features. The suitcase has a spinner design, making it almost effortless move around on the smooth airport floors.

The wheels on the suitcase are sturdy and easy to turn. The telescoping handle is sturdy as well and there are squishy carrying handles at the side and top of the bag for lifting.

Built into the side of the suitcase is a TSA approved lock. The zippers clip directly onto the lock as depicted in the image above. I really like the built in lock feature since I frequently find myself loosing luggage locks.

When you first get the suitcase, the combination will automatically be set to “0 0 0”, but there are simple instructions included for you to reset the lock and choose your own combination.

Durability:

The Heys FVT suitcase is made of a lightweight and flexible polycarbonate composite material. The material is quite durable, although thin to make the luggage lightweight. It would take a large drop or forceful hit in order to dent or crack the shell.

I wouldn’t have any qualms about the suitcase breaking if I checked it in, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it picked up some scratches in transit. The polycarbonate exterior will survive some drops, but it isn’t scratch proof.

Durability: 7/10

Interior and Organization:

The interior of the Heys luggage is quite standard. There’s a one half of the suitcase can be separated by a zipper and on the other side there’s a nylon strap for cinching down your clothes and gear. There are also a couple of pockets in the middle as you can see in the photo above.

I highly recommend getting packing cubes when using this suitcase – or any suitcase in general. Packing cubes are like portable drawers and make it a lot easier and less of a hassle to organize your clothes. You can read more about the pros and cons of packing cubes.

The expansion zipper can be unzipped to give the suitcase extra room. Like with most hard-sided suitcases, there are no pockets on the exterior of this suitcase, so if you need to quickly stash something away, or access an item inside, you’ll have to open the entire main compartment.

Interior and Organization: 7/10

Cons:

• Can get scratched

Luggage handlers can be merciless. If dropped or thrown, this Heys suitcase can get scratched, tarnishing it’s exterior.

When doing a drop test on concrete, the corners got scratched up. The scratches weren’t obvious, but the suitcase wasn’t in it’s formerly pristine nature. When checking this suitcase in, know that it can get scuffed or scratched.

The Verdict:

Forget pretending to be Canadian. Flaunt your American pride with the Heys FVT USA suitcase.

With an exterior this colorful, it’s hard to miss the Heys FVT USA at the baggage claim. The suitcase is lightweight and well made, although it can get scuffed up if you check it in (which you have to do if you’re flying. It’s not carry-on). This check-in suitcase is ideal for vacationers, short term travelers and even family  travelers.
