Why Compression Socks:
Compression socks “increase circulation and prevent muscle damage” according to Competitor.com. They help speed up recovery time after runs and reduce muscle fatigue. In addition to their running qualities, compression socks can be useful for long flights.
As I’ve experienced, back to back movies during an Auckland to San Francisco flight can take their toll. Inactivity and loss of circulation during flights can lead to cramps and even blood clots. According the NPR, a woman suddenly died during a long flight because of a blood clot – not that that occurs often. 🙂
Activities, like being stagnant for 12+ hours as I experienced during my recent flight, and standing up for long hours cause things like varicose veins and spider veins. Compression socks can also help to prevent and mitigate these things.
With all the scientific things aside, one thing’s for sure, these socks are comfortable.
Pros:
- Comfortable
- Easy to hand wash and quick drying
- Compression
- Lightweight
- Durable
- Soft
- Merino wool
The Point6 Compression Wave socks are made of a blend of 60% wool, 28% nylon and 12% spandex. From wearing my other pair of merino wool socks, the Icebreaker Multisport socks, I’ve been sold on the benefits of merino wool. It’s soft, naturally odor resistant among other things.
You can read more about the benefits of merino wool here: Point6 Wool Properties.
I’ve only been wearing these socks for about a month, but I can feel that they are quite durable. I’ll update this review if I ever come across any issues.
The socks have an ergonomic fit with a comfy heel pocket, mesh ventilation panels and reinforced heel and toe areas. The Point6 Compression socks are also lightweight, without any cushion or insulation making them great for traveling light.
In case you need help with putting on compression socks, here’s a video:
I have run in these socks a couple of times and almost fell off the treadmill while looking down to appreciate awesome design. One thing I was concerned about prior to running in these socks was if the upper part of the socks would slide down my calf. Towards the end of the run, they were still in place, putting my fears aside.
As for the compression aspect, I can’t confirm that the socks made me run any faster or recover faster, but they are good at motivating me to run.
Cons:
- Pricey
Honestly, I haven’t come across any issues with these socks. My only gripe would be the price of these socks, retail $39.95. Although the price is quite high, it is comparable to other brands such as 2XU, and SmartWool with some of their socks not being merino wool. I guess you could say the price is justifiable since merino wool is an expensive material as I noticed in New Zealand, as wool prices are high even though there are more sheep there than humans there. Also compression socks in general are on the pricey side for socks.
The Verdict:
The Point6 Compression Wave socks are a top notch pair of socks suitable for athletes and travelers alike. If you can find two spare twenty-dollar bills laying around in your house, the Point6 Socks will keep your feet and calves happy.
