Skysiesta Travel Pillow Review

When most people think “travel pillows”, they usually think about “U” shaped neck pillows. But as I’ve learned from reviewing pretty much all of the best travel pillows, “U” shaped isn’t always the case (or the most comfortable).

Just like it’s nonconforming competitors, the SkySiesta travel pillow has a unique design and is strangely practical at the same time.

The Travelrest pillow looks like a demented banana, the J-Pillow is shaped like the letter “J”, the Ostrich Pillow Mini looks like an ostrich egg, and the SkySiesta travel pillow looks like a cross between a scroll and a foam pillow.

The SkySiesta is basically two foam bolsters with a velour cover connecting them.

Pros:

• Soft foam cushions
• Supports the head
• Blocks out noise
• Lightweight
• Attached band for keeping cylindrical cushions together
• Removable washable cover

The shape of the SkySiesta gives the it distinctive advantages and disadvantages. The two cylinders are connected together like two cans are connected in a tin can telephone. When leaning backwards with the SkySiesta, the two cushions support the head and give your head something to lean on, even if you’re in the middle seat. I have a normal shaped/sized head and the SkySiesta fits as it should. I wouldn’t see this pillow not fitting you well unless you have a really big or small head, since it is a ‘one size fits all’ type of product.

Since they aren’t made of memory foam, the cushions are generally lightweight and don’t get too hot – unfortunately sacrificing the squishiness and soft yet supportive conforming nature of memory foam.

Seemingly inadvertently, the SkySiesta pillow does a good job at blocking out ambient noise. The two side cushions of the pillow cover the ears blocking out some noise – very useful for plane travel.

The two foam bolsters can be unzipped from the velour cover so that you can easily machine wash the cover in case it gets dirty when traveling. The pillow also comes with a nylon carrying pouch and a basic eye mask.

Cons:

• Only works if you lean backwards against something
• Bulky

The SkySiesta isn’t the most compressible, so if you are planning on traveling with it, be prepared to make a bit of space. It does come with a carrying pouch though, which helps make it a bit more portable.

Another issue I’ve had when testing the SkySiesta was that if leaned forward to grab something from my backpack under my seat, or to reach for something, the SkySiesta will fall out of place. You must lean against something for the pillow to support your head.

Update:

According to Kalpana, the founder of the SkySiesta, “There is an eyemask included with adjustable elastic that can go around the pillow – so the pillow is essentially attached to your head. The elastic can also go around the headrest wings and keep you head attached to the seat.”

I would imagine that this would help to solve the issue with the pillow falling out of place.

The Verdict:

The SkySiesta is a supportive but somewhat limited travel pillow. Overall, it’s a comfortable and lightweight pillow although the design feels a bit raw. The SkySiesta pillow costs $24.50 and can be found here on Amazon.com.
