Sol Republic Shadow Wireless Earbuds Review

12 hours into wearing the Sol Republic Shadow wireless earbuds, I had completely forgotten I had them on.

Although I wasn’t playing music constantly, (the earbuds are rated at 8 hours battery life) they were there when I needed them and connected to all of my Bluetooth devices seamlessly. With their sleek design, the Shadow can become your go to earbuds for travel or even as an upgrade for getting back to school.

Here are some of my thoughts on the earbuds:

Pros:

The Sol Republic Shadow wireless headphones have a low profile design, hence ‘shadow‘ and are really lightweight and compact. The collar is designed to comfortably rest around your neck. Although this is an overused statement, you really start to forget you have them on. During testing, I’ve worn these headphones for several hours straight without any problems or fatigue.

The battery life of these headphones can comfortably last me the entire day (rated at 8 hours of playback time). They can be charged using the included micro-USB cord. I’ve noticed that charging time is pretty fast.

One of my favorite features is the Shadows’ ability to connect to two different devices at the same time. When working, I usually have both my computer and iPhone with me, so I’ve set the headphones up to be connected to both devices via Bluetooth. Audio from both devices can’t play at the same time, however if I switch between both devices or try to pick up a phone call, I won’t have to disconnect and reconnect the headphones.

These headphones come with 4 extra pairs of ear tips, large, medium, small and extra small. The medium tips that the Shadows came with out of the package fit my ears perfectly and they do a good job at isolating noise. The buds don’t fall out of my ears and have a sealed and comfortable fit.

Cons:

I’m a runner and it would be really nice if Sol Republic made wireless headphones specifically for runners. Although the Shadows are lightweight and comfortable for walking or sitting, they bounce and shift around too much to be used for running.

By pressing the volume buttons simultaneously, the headphones will beep either 3 times, twice or once, 3 times indicating that there is a large amount of battery left, 2 indicating medium and 1 indicating low battery. I wish the system was a bit more detailed, like if a battery percentage was given.

The Verdict:

The Sol Republic Shadow Wireless headphones are some of the best wireless headphones around right now. They are well suited to travelers, students and commuters. Being wireless, they allow extra freedom while maintaining high sound quality.

Decently priced at retail $100, the Sol Republic Shadows can be found at SolRepublic.com.
