SunGod Sunglasses Review

I’ve written this countless times on Thither: Sunglasses are an absolute must-have for all travelers.

If you’re caught out in the middle of a salt flat in Bolivia, or hiking in the South Island of New Zealand, you’re going to want a quality pair of sunglasses. I’m not sure if this is scientific, but I think that the high altitude in Bolivia adds to the sun’s intensity, making the need to protect your eyes even greater.

While traveling around the world, I mainly relied on my polarized Oakley glasses; however my new sunglasses from SunGod, a company based in England, might just take that pole position.

SunGod started out as a successfully crowdfunded product and has grown to now allows anyone to customize their own glasses over at SunGod.co. Here are my thoughts on their sunglasses:

Pros:

• Fully customizable
• Lightweight
• Polarized
• Decently priced
• Durable
• Flexible frame
• Stylish
• UV protective
• Includes a microfiber cleaning pouch

One thing which makes SunGod sunglasses unique is that you can fully customize them according to your color preferences. You can choose the color of your frame, lenses and even the arms. There are tons of color choices, letting you design a pair that fully reflects your style.

When given the choice to customize my pair, I honestly had no idea what color scheme to choose. So, I chose something from the Signature Series. Under the LTD Edition tab of the SunGod website, you’ll find the Signature Series glasses as well as Limited Edition glasses which have exclusive designs, like carbon fiber frames. Glasses in the Signature Series are exactly the same as the normal Classics², just have different preset designs inspired by SunGod athletes.

To match my minimalistic style, I chose an all black pair: the Andrew Cotton Signature Series ’15 shades, inspired by surfer and SunGod sponsored athlete, Andrew Cotton. The frame and arms of the glasses are completely matte black and the SunGod logo and lenses are black as well.

The frame is made of a flexible “Adventure” proof material. I’ve tried bending and twisting it, and it feels pretty durable. I’d be comfortable with throwing my glasses into my backpack, not having to worry about them breaking.

As for the polarization, I feel like the SunGod are almost as good as my Oakleys. They both cut down glare and are helpful when looking in water. If I had to choose between polarized and nonpolarized, I would choose polarized in a heartbeat. Polarization makes everything look better and it only costs around USD $25 more than the regular (nonpolarized) lenses, which is significantly less than other sunglasses brands.

Cons:

• Fit seemed a bit loose

One issue I’ve come across when wearing the SunGod sunglasses is that they’re a bit loose on my face. Here’s some information about sizing from the SunGod FAQ:

Our sunglasses are one size fits all. SunGod Classics² utilise a super flexible memory plastic that fit well on both large and small heads. SunGod Mavericks feature a semi-maleable frame material that can be adjusted to fit your head size and shape.

When doing a vigorous activity, like running, or if I quickly turn my head, the glasses tend to slide down. These sunglasses aren’t meant for running, but I’d like it if they were a bit tighter fitting. I’ve bent the frames a bit which has helped but doesn’t have that glove-like fit that my Oakleys have.

Another minor aspect, which is mainly personal preference, is that I wish the frame of the Classics² was a bit more rectangular and less droopy.

Update:

I’ve had the Sungod sunglasses for almost a year now, and they’ve held up really well.

The Verdict:

Every traveler needs a trusty pair of sunglasses and the SunGod sunglasses are a great option. SunGod sunglasses are both polarized and durable, allowing you to explore the world without having to worry about your sunglasses breaking. Plus they protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

Priced at £60 (about USD $90) for a polarized pair of Classics² and £45 (about USD $68) for the non polarized Classics², you won’t have to break the bank to get a high quality pair of sunglasses.
