Power Practical Pronto 5 Battery Pack Review

Have you ever reached for your external battery pack, just to find it completely dead?

That happens to me pretty often. Owning around 7 battery packs (I lose track), before I leave the house I usually grab one in case I need the extra juice. It’s not an infrequent occurrence for me to grab a dead battery pack, and if you own a battery pack, you’ll know they aren’t the type of things you can recharge quickly.

Some large capacity battery packs, such as the Anker Astro3E 10000mAh external battery, need to be charged overnight in order to be fully recharged.

Thankfully, the Pronto 5 from Power Practical is a high capacity battery pack that can be recharged completely in only 1 hour. The Pronto 5 is made of a durable and slim aluminium case and has a capacity of 4,500 mAh.

What sets the Pronto 5 apart from other batteries is it’s super fast charge speeds. It claims to be the “fastest charging portable battery on the market” and I don’t doubt that.

Instead of being charged only via USB, the Pronto 5 comes with it’s own AC wall charger which puts out 25 watts allowing all 4,500 mAh to be recharged within an hour.

Pros:

• Durable, rugged
• Fast charging, recharges completely in an hour
• Can be charged with special included charger or via USB
• AC wall charger and micro USB cable included
• Slim design

At the front of the Pronto 5, you’ll find two circular lights. One indicates the current battery capacity and the other indicates how fast the Pronto is charging.

The USB port, AC charger port and micro USB port are protected with a silicone lined cap. The cap is secured with a stretchy nylon strap. Beneath the strap is the power button. After plugging your cable into the battery pack, remember to press the power button to start charging. You can also press the power button to display the current battery level.

The battery pack has a 4,500 mAh capacity meaning it can recharge an iPhone 6 about 2.5 times and an iPhone 5S almost 3 times. While testing the Pronto 5 out, I was able to keep my iPhone juiced up, but I wished it had a bit larger capacity in case I’d need power for multiple days or if I were shooting video.

Being able to recharge the battery pack was very useful during my recent trip to Atlanta. Right before I left for the airport, I was able to completely recharge the Pronto 5 in the short time before having to check out of my room.

In case you don’t want to recharge the Pronto 5 with the AC wall charger, you can use the included micro USB cord and charge the pronto via your iPhone or smartphone wall charger.

Cons:

• Minor issue: the Pronto 5 is somewhat heavy (9 oz according to my scale)
• Minor issue: the special charging system means you’ll have to travel with yet another charger and more cables

The one-piece anodized aluminum case is very durable, but it weighs a substantial amount considering how slim it is. Although the Pronto 5 fits in my hand, it weighs more than half a pound. It’s a dense product, made almost completely of metal which is good in terms of durability but a concern if you’re ounce counting.

The Verdict:

Overall, the Pronto 5 battery pack is a big step up from your average battery pack. While other batteries would need to be charged overnight, this one can be charged within an hour. It’s well made and you can tell Power Practical has put a lot of thought into it’s design.

The Power Practical Pronto 5 comes at retail $80. That’s much more than some other battery packs you can find on Amazon.com, however considering the Pronto 5’s charging speed and durable build, it’s worth it.
