Family Travel Quotes: Travel Inspiration for the Whole Family

March 6, 2020 By Thither Staff Leave a Comment

Once the travel bug bites there is no known antidote, and I know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life. – Michael Palin

I think I caught this so-called travel bug when I took my first trip overseas as a one year old. And I continued to travel during my school years with my family almost every summer.

Then when I turned 17, we took traveling to another level: long-term traveling. My mom, dad, younger brother and I took a two year trip around the world. We sold our home and most of our belongings and slowly traveled through South America then to Europe and to Asia via the Transmongolian Railway, New Zealand then back to the US. By the time I was 21, I’d been to over 30 countries.

I learned valuable lessons through traveling as a kid and teenager that I don’t think I could’ve learned any other way. There were so many lessons like learning to appreciate the world and people of all cultures, to appreciate and be thankful for what I have, to learn to go with the flow and to value experiences over material things. I also picked up Spanish and a basic amount of Mandarin Chinese by attending intensive classes and interacting with locals. But most importantly, I learned the importance of family and how traveling can enrich those relationships.

This is why I always encourage families to travel together. When I tell my story, I hear parents tell me that they wish they could also travel with their kids. I tell them to do everything they can to make it happen. I will always be grateful to my parents for introducing me to travel at a young age because it made me who I am today.

So if you need a little inspiration, here’s a list of family travel quotes to inspire the whole family to travel.

Travel Quotes About Making Memories Together

As mentioned, one of the main things I learned from traveling as a kid and teenager is to value experiences over material things. I don’t remember much about what I was wearing, what I bought or what I brought with me on my two year around the world trip, but there are countless memories I can recall, laugh about and reminiscence together with my parents and brother like when we took a helicopter over the Iguazu Falls, went horseback riding in Mongolia and ate guinea pig in Ecuador.

Travel Quotes About Learning and Alternative Education

I took a non-traditional route for my education. I went to high school part time and did extra classes online to graduate early so I could take a two year gap year and travel. I remember more things I learned during my time of traveling than I did from sitting down within four walls of a classroom.
