VyprVPN Review: The best VPN for travelers

Have you ever connected to a random WiFi network while traveling?

I have – countless times. Praise the Lord I haven’t been hacked. (Yet.)

It turns out connecting to any random WiFi network isn’t the most secure thing you can do. According to Kaspersky, a leader in cyber security:

The biggest threat to free WiFi security is the ability for the hacker to position himself between you and the connection point. So instead of talking directly with the hotspot, you’re sending your information to the hacker, who then relays it on.

One of the best and easiest ways to prevent hackers intercepting information is by using a VPN. I described more details about why you need a VPN when traveling in this article in this article I wrote a while back. Long story short, VPNs are a travel must-have and I had the opportunity to test out this VPN from VyprVPN. Here are my thoughts on the VyprVPN:

Pros:

• Easy to set up, even for the non-tech savvy
• Easy to use applications, beautiful UI
• Several devices can use the VPN simultaneously (five for VyprVPN Premier account, three devices for the normal account)
• Seamless iPhone application
• Many different server locations around the globe, including multiple locations in the USA, Australia, UK, Canada, Iceland, Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. This means you can make your IP look like you are in any of those countries, e.g. when you’re traveling in China, you can make it look like you are in Canada. • Works in China
• Fast
• Applications for and compatible with all operating systems (MacOS, Windows, iOS, Android, etc.) on your computer and phone
• It’s pretty cheap, more on pricing later

When using the VyprVPN, I haven’t had any noticeable difference in speeds. I’m sure all the nerds will come out of the woodwork and say, “but when I tested it by pinging google.com on command prompt my latency up by .23 Mbps!” Guess what, it’s really not noticeable, especially if you’re in a developed country using decently fast WiFi to begin with. According to VyprVPN, using a VPN can actually increase your internet speeds if your ISP throttles certain IPs at certain times of overload.

Compared to StrongVPN, a VPN provider which I used previously, VyprVPN was incredibly easy to set up, even for the least technically savvy. To start using VyprVPN on my MacBook, all I had to do was:

1. Download the VyprVpn application for MacOS
2. Log in with my VyprVPN account, which you’ll create after using my link to get 25% off
3. Click the “Connect” button
4. That’s it

To use VyprVPN on my iPhone here’s what I had to do:

1. Open the App Store, search for “VyprVPN”, then download the app
2. Open the app, set up the VPN in your phone’s settings. The VyprVPN application gave easy step-by-step instructions to turn some things on in the ‘Settings’ app.
3. Tap the connect button!

On my phone, I’ve started to always leave the VPN on, even when I’m at home. This way, I don’t have the hassle of having to reconnect and disconnect and the VPN connects every time I connect to a new WiFi network.

Cons: (big update from the 2016 review)

• None! It used to be back in 2016 that VyprVPN didn’t get past certain VPN blocking filters, like that employed by BBC iPlayer. Now, it works fine. (I was using VyprVPN Premium to test this. I haven’t used normal VyprVPN, so I can’t personally confirm that the same applies.) You might need to go in incognito mode in addition to turning your VPN on since your cookies may also reveal your location.

VyprVPN allows you to choose your location. If you choose the UK IP address, you can make it look to websites as if you are in the United Kingdom. BBC iPlayer is an example of a website which uses a filter to block users based on their location, only allowing people located in the UK to watch their content. In the words straight from VyprVPN’s marketing team, VyprVPN allows you to “[e]scape government censorship and Internet restrictions. Whether you live in China, Russia, Turkey, or the Middle East, restore your access to a free and open Internet with VyprVPN.” Wow, incredible.

The Verdict:

VPNs are a must have for all travelers, and VyprVPN is one of the easiest to use VPN services, great for travelers and those who want to safely browse the Internet.

VyprVPN costs $3.75 per month for the normal service and $5.00 per month for VyprVPN premium, which has some extra cool features like being able to use 5 devices at the same time versus 3, and access to the “Chameleon Protocol” which allows users to bypass VPN blocking and censorship, and “VyprVPN Cloud”, which uh, I have no idea what it does and have had no need for it. My 25% off applies to both plans. The 25% off only applies to the first year. 🙁 (These prices refer to if you buy the yearly plan, which makes more sense than the monthly plan. It’s more expensive if you buy the monthly plan. Sad!)
