January 24, 2020 By Thither Staff Leave a Comment

If you’re a bibliophile like myself, you always look for the best bookstores to visit whenever you travel. If you’re reading this, you’re likely planning or are on your way to Stockholm and want to include a few bookstores to stop by while experiencing what the city has to offer.

These are all located in the center of the city and close to other attractions so you might not be far from any of these bookstores.

1. NK Stockholm

Luxury department store, Nordiska Kompaniet (The Nordic Company in English) was founded in 1902 and has two locations in Sweden, one in Gothenburg and the other in Stockholm. This department store houses internationally recognized and Scandinavian fashion brands, homeware and restaurants across four floors. And on the third floor along with a restaurant and interior design goods, you’ll find books. It’s a whole bookstore worth of books mostly in Swedish, but a few in English too.

Address: Hamngatan 18-20, 111 47 Stockholm, Sweden

2. Hedengrens

Hedengrens carries books in several languages from Swedish, German, Spanish, Norwegian and a large selection of English in every genre. It’s history begins back in 1897 and has since been a place for book lovers to find a new book and attend frequent book signings and events.

Address: Stureplan 4, 114 35 Stockholm, Sweden

  • The English Bookshop Stockholm

3. The English Bookshop

The English Bookshop is just as its name suggests. An entire bookshop filled with books in English. There’s a children’s section, fiction, classics in various editions and bookish merchandise. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can put in a request. They also have another store in Uppsala, a city about an hour outside Stockholm.

Address: Södermannagatan 22, 116 23 Stockholm, Sweden

4. SF Bookstore

The letters S and F in SF Bookstore stand for science and fiction. This is a bookstore dedicated to science fiction books located in the old town of Stockholm, Gamla Stan. If you’re exploring elsewhere in Sweden, you can also find an SF bookstore in Göteborg and Malmö.

Address: Västerlånggatan 48, 111 29 Stockholm, Sweden

5. Akademibokhandeln

Akademibokhandeln is Sweden’s leading bookstore chain. There are over 100 locations across the country and one of them is in Stockholm on Mäster Samuelsgatan right among all the shops in central Stockholm. There’s a wide range of books in English.

Address: Mäster Samuelsgatan 28, 111 57 Stockholm, Sweden

6. Gamla Stans Bokhandel

Another bookstore to stop by while roaming the streets of Stockholm’s old town is Gamla Stans Bokhandel. It’s located on Stora Nygatan, Stockholm’s oldest boulevard and has a large selection in English.

Address: Stora Nygatan 7, 111 27 Stockholm, Sweden

7. Antikvariat August

Stop by Antikvariat August while walking along the pedestrian walking street, Drottninggatan. It’s the only used bookstore on this list and is a place for book collectors to find rare fiction or nonfiction editions from various time periods, all in good or very good condition.

Address: Drottninggatan 85, 111 60 Stockholm, Sweden

King Karl XI Gallery Stockholm Palace

Museum Gift Shops

Museum gift shops are also a great place to find books based on the museum you’re visiting. For photography books, check out Fotografiska’s museum gift shop. And for Swedish history and more about the Royal Family, check out the gift shops at Stockholm Palace.

Stockholm Public Library

Not a bookstore, but this is a destination for all book lovers to see designed by Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund. It’s open to the public and free to visit. Don’t miss going inside to see the rotunda with three floors of 360-degree shelves full of books.

Address: Sveavägen 73, 113 80 Stockholm, Sweden
