LifeProof iPhone 5s Case Review

LifeProof has saved my iPhone 4s countless times. It has been tested through all of Lifeproof’s “4 Proofs”- water, dirt, snow and shock proof features while traveling.

Water: Other than using it in water, when traveling, sometimes the weather takes a toll on the days you want to spend some time outdoors. I’ve walked in downpours in Montevideo and still used my phone without worrying about it getting wet.

Dirt: Without fail during the times we’ve trekked in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador, I’ve dropped my phone without purposely trying to drop it. Trails were covered in dirt but the case saved the phone. Even while sandboarding in Peru, there was practically a sandstorm with the wind and endless amounts of sand whirling around. I dropped it in the sand and didn’t worry.

Snow: It snowed one day while we were in Argentina but I took some pictures with my phone protected in the LifeProof case.

Shock: You may be like me… you seem to drop your phone everywhere, even when you’re careful. You don’t have to worry about dropping it because the case is shock proof. I’ve accidentally had it thrown against a wall and dropped while walking around several cities.

So when it came time to upgrade to the iPhone 5s, there was no question about which phone case to get, the LifeProof iPhone 5s frē Case. Taking this from someone who travels often, here are the pros and cons.

Pros

1. Thin and Lightweight

Even though the case encloses the entire phone, it doesn’t make it any more bulky. In fact, it’s so thin it doesn’t even feel like there’s a case. It’s also lightweight. The iPhone 5s in the LifeProof iPhone 5s case actually feels lighter than the iPhone 4s by itself.

2. Sensor for Fingerprint

With the introduction of the Touch ID feature for iPhone 5s, LifeProof’s iPhone 5s case has the ability to work even though it covers the home button.

3. Waterproof

LifeProof is known for making cases that are waterproof. The iPhone 5s case is no different. Accidents, spilling liquids on it or going swimming with it – LifeProof has you covered.

Cons

1. Sound Switch

Though you can push the sleep and volume buttons easily through the case, it’s hard to toggle the silent switch above the volume buttons.

2. Sound

Because the case covers the whole phone, it also covers the speakers. It’s not covered entirely to where you can’t hear anything but it still makes a difference to the sound quality.

3. Hopefully it won’t turn out like my iPhone 4s case

It could be because of all the traveling from dropping it on hard surfaces, going through cold weather, winds with sand from sand dunes while sandboarding, trekking in high altitudes in Peru to name a few, but I hope after traveling with it for months it won’t end up like this.

Who It’s For:

The iPhone 5s owner who leads an active life and doesn’t want to worry about being gentle with their phone. From throwing it into your bag, shoving in your pocket to using it while traveling, hiking or exploring a city, this is a case to consider.

Who It Isn’t For:

The person that doesn’t have an iPhone 5. Obviously. But also the person that doesn’t like having a screen protector over their phone. It doesn’t make a huge difference but at times you do have to tap harder. Or for the person that doesn’t need their iPhone to be waterproof.

The Verdict:

The fact that the case doesn’t add any noticeable weight or bulkiness but still protects the iPhone is a huge plus.

I’ve had a positive experience with using my iPhone 4s case while long term traveling in South America. I hope the iPhone 5s case lives up to it.
