Victorinox, the inventor of the Swiss Army Knife, has released a new line of carry-on luggage – the Etherius Illusion.
We’ve since got our hands on the new carry-on, tested it in the field, and here are our thoughts:

The Etherius Illusion is a standard sized carry-on with quality and all the details you’d expect from a Victorinox product. It measures at 21 inches tall, 15 inches wide and 8 inches deep. There are four smooth spinner wheels, one top grab handle and a telescoping handle – nothing out of the ordinary.

Pros
- Lightweight, 5 lbs when empty (independently weighed by me, with my trusty luggage scale (not copied off the manufacturer’s specs))
- Sleek design
- Built in TSA luggage lock
- Smooth, quiet wheels
- Expandable

Cons

My main con for the Victorinox Etherius Illusion is that it scuffed surprisingly easily. I wasn’t particularly rough and can’t remember what caused the scuffs – I barely used the bag.
This carry-on needs a grab handle at the side. Currently it only has one grab handle, located at the top of the bag. When lifting a suitcase out of the trunk of a car or from an airplane overhead compartment, having a side handle is very useful. It’s a minor inconvenience, but I expect to have one here considering this bag retails for about $300.

The Verdict
Overall, the Victorinox Etherius Illusion carry-on is a solid suitcase perfect for any globetrotter. I just wouldn’t want to check this suitcase in, as it’ll probably get roughed up by luggage carriers.
While this suitcase retails for $300, you can find it for around $250 on Amazon.com. It’s not exactly a ‘steal’ but this suitcase will probably last you years to come, which I why I’ve given it a 7/10 rating in the value department.

Hi, Thanks for this review…it further confirms my decision to buy this global carry-on. I just bought one today and it had a lot of scuffs (it was on sale for only $70 and the clerk said it might have been returned by somebody because of all the scuffs — the tags were still attached, though so it seems like they didn’t really use it much). I found a review online where somebody said that Barkeeper’s Friend cleaning powder removes the scuffs. I made a paste with Barkeeper’s Friend and water and used a paper towel to gently scrub the scuffs; indeed, it removed them all and did not leave any scratches. The gleaming bronze surface looks great now. It seems like a really nice bag and, especially with all the scuffs removed, I feel as though I got a bargain. I hope this “Barkeeper’s Friend” suggestion is useful to other users of these bags.
