Paraty happened to be one of those places that I wish that I didn’t go to. Our family went there on a tour with Tucan Travel, but it ended up not being that interesting. After day 1 in Paraty, I was ready to go. Here’s why:
1. Overly Touristy
Since Paraty is in Brazil, and close to Argentina, most of the tourists are from either of those countries. While I went, during the weekend, all of the streets were so crowded with tourists that there was basically a human traffic jam. We must have gone at the worst possible time, because all of the people from Sao Paulo had some holiday and no work. All of the streets of the historical area were packed with people pushing to take photos
My parents, sister and I visited the city while on a tour with Tucan Travel. Our tour guide walked us around the main Portuguese colonial area, but our group almost lost him in the crowd. To add to the touristy-ness, there were a bunch of little kids dressed in native costumes that sang native songs. So all of the tourists were like “how cute”, then gave money. It’s all a part of the evil marketing scheme.
2. Terrible Weather
It rains way too often in Paraty. To make it even worst, it floods every Full Moon due to high tides. While we were there, it rained 2 out of 3 days, making those two days completely useless. Raining can completely ruin your whole day, especially if you’re camping. Our tour group’s tents got rained out, so we had to move to a nearby hostel like refugees. At the hostel, it was all humid, wet, sticky and disgusting.
What is even worst was that most of the activities in Paraty require being outside. It usually rains in Paraty during the afternoon, especially in the summer. If it’s not raining, then it’s probably way too hot and humid out. When it rains, it pours – literally.
This picture was taken during our only sunny day, but then it rained in the evening:
Most of the time it looked like this:
3. There’s Nothing To Do There
Life doesn’t make sense. There are so many tourists, but nothing really to see in Paraty. Paraty has several beaches, but I’m not the beach type of person, and the beaches apparently weren’t that great. Our tour group went on a boat ride, which went around the coast of Paraty, but it wasn’t really interesting. There are places to trek around Paraty, but we couldn’t trek because it was raining. I was really underwhelmed with all of the activities, but maybe it’s just that I’m not interested in what Paraty has to offer.
I didn’t like the place at all, but my mom really did, so it all depends on what you like.
