If you’re looking for bookstores in Copenhagen Denmark, these are a few to visit around the city. Even if you don’t speak Danish, you’ll find plenty of bookstores in Copenhagen that carry books in English, bookstores with history, used bookstores, nonprofits and more.

Politikens Boghal

Politikens is a Danish newspaper. They’ve opened a bookstore, Politikens Boghal located in central Copenhagen, right off Strøget pedestrian street. Their well stocked three floor store includes a large selection of books in English. The shop is frequently hosting literary events and has a cafe.

Cinnober Bookshop & Gallery

Cinnober is both an independent bookshop and a gallery offering a range of design, architecture, fashion and photography books. They also have a selection of prints by local artists and a range of office supplies. Cinnober is located just a minute walk away from the Round Tower.

Bookshop at The Black Diamond

The Black Diamond is a modern extension of the Royal Library. It’s open to the public with lots of space for studying and reading. But it’s not just a library. It’s also home to the National Museum of Photography, the Museum of Danish Cartoon Art, a cafe and a bookshop.

Books & Company

Books and Company is an independent English bookstore in Copenhagen with a large variety of fiction, non fiction and children’s books. They’re also known to host monthly book clubs at the shop.

Ark Books

Ark Books is an international, nonprofit and volunteer run bookstore. The majority of their collection is in English but they also have books in German, French and Spanish. Ark also hosts a podcast and has released The Ark First Edition, a publication of two texts (Paul Auster’s ALONE and Siri Hustvedt’s Becoming the Other in Translation) with only six copies in existence. In libraries, there’s one copy located in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, another in the New York Public Library and another at the Danish Royal Library.

Arnold Busck

Arnold Busck is Denmark’s oldest and largest bookstore chain with its first bookstore opened in 1896. You’ll find books of all genres including best sellers, fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, with a large range of books in English. There’s a location right next to the Round Tower and has views of the tower from the second floor.

The Booktrader

Down the road from Arnold Busck near the Round Tower is the Booktrader. This bookstore in Copenhagen carries used books in several languages and is also situated in a historic spot. The street, Skindergade, which the bookstore is located at is one of the oldest streets in Copenhagen and the bookstore is housed in a building built in 1831, on the ruins of Grey Friar Monastery.

Bonus: Christiansborg Palace

Though none of the books are for sale, it’s worth seeing The Queen’s Library located in Christiansborg Palace. Meetings and tea parties are held in this room surrounded by Her Majesty the Queen’s books. The collection displayed extends to three kilometres of shelves, and it’s only 10% of the entire collection (the rest are at Amalienborg Palace.) Among the collection are first editions of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales.

Danish author Hans Christian Andersen has left a mark all over Copenhagen. There’s The Little Mermaid statue inspired by his fairytale, Hans Christian Andersen Fairytale House museum all about his life and also HC Andersens Cafe, located at Nyhavn 67, one of the places he’s rented rooms at.
