Drawing from their construction roots, the Cat Footwear Colorados are lifestyle boots with a work flare.
When traveling to Indonesia last year, I visited my uncle for the first time in several years. Interestingly enough, he works for Cat. The Asian branch to be exact.
One of the things I noticed about my uncle was that although he worked in the construction industry, he spent a lot of time in office attire as a sales person and consultant in addition to surveying construction sites. My uncle’s worked for a construction machinery company, yet spent most of his time in an office.
What does that have to do with these boots? Well, the Cat Colorado boots might have the name “Cat”, but doesn’t mean they are purely hardwearing construction work boots – they’re for stylin’ around urban settings as much as they are rugged.
I’ve reviewed the Colorado boots in the color Brown in size 9. Here are my thoughts:
- Great traction
- For work/adventure or casual streetwear
- Comes in several colors, ranging from camo to red and even a multicolored wool design. There are also a ton of colors in the women’s version as well including metallic gold
- Made from full grain leather and nubuck
Starting from the bottom, these boots have a chunky and deep lugged sole, giving great traction whether you’re walking down an urban sidewalk or a sheet of ice. The upper is made of nubuck (cowhide leather that has been rubbed on the outer side of the hide to give it a feel like that of suede, nubuck is more durable than suede).
These boots are well suited to winter wear and for travelers to cold parts of the world.
Pair these boots with denim, or even joggers. If you want to make a statement while traveling, you may want to consider some of Cat’s more out there colors. Check out this helpful article from Complex.com on how to style the boots. (The article was written for Timberland boots, however the Cat Footwear boots essentially have the same design/style.)
Warmth and Waterproof:
The Colorado boots are warm enough to be worn in the winter, and when paired with a warm pair of socks should keep you cozy during subfreezing temperatures. I usually wear my wool Injinji toe socks with these boots. While the Colorados are warm, if you’re planning on walking in snow and doing hardcore snow activities, you might want to get the Kamik Coldcreeks or Lowa Oslo boots instead.
The original Cat Colorado boots which I am reviewing are not waterproof, however you can get the Colorado Gore-Tex version which is made with Gore-Tex’s waterproof and breathable technology. The original comes at retail $135 whereas the Gore-Tex version costs $160.
Although the original boots aren’t waterproof, water won’t seep in if you accidentally step in a puddle, but the leather will absorb some water over time. If you coat the leather with some waterproofing/protective oil or wax, like Nikwax, you should be okay stepping in shallow puddles or if you get caught in the rain.
A pair of Colorado boots in size 9 weighs 3 lbs. 2 oz. according to my kitchen scale. The weight is reasonable for a pair of boots.
These boots fit true to size. I’m a 9 in Timberland, Danner and Cat Footwear. The soles are a bit stiff at first, but after you break into the boots they become more flexible. These boots have ample arch support and are comfortable even when worn for long periods of time or if you’re visiting a museum or on a day tour and on your feet all day.
The Colorado boots don’t have steel toes, so if you’re looking for traditional work boots, this section of Cat’s work boots might be a better option.
If you’re looking for the waterproof version, check out the Colorado Gore-Tex boots.
With it’s rugged build and classic design, the Cat Colorado boot is ready to take on your next winter adventure. I would recommend these boots to travelers and those looking for tough yet stylish boots. I guess I need to get a pair for my uncle now.
You can find these boots for retail $135 at CatFootwear.com.
